While 2020 wasn’t the year we asked for, we have to lean in on the positives that came out of it.
I can think of 5 really great things that came out of 2020 that I’d like to share with you.
First, as an Industry, we became more tech savvy.
Prior to COVID shutting down our schools, many school owners weren’t the most “tech savvy” individuals.
Having our brick and mortar businesses shut down forced us to think outside of the box and learn new skills.
Most schools pivoted to online classes which required them to learn new technologies such as Zoom.
We had to figure out what types of web cams, mics, and lighting would help us best offer our services.
And I look at those items as an investment - because without them, many of us
would have had to permanently close our doors.
Second, we all became better instructors.
As a whole, as Instructors, most of us prefer to teach our students on the mats in
our academies. But COVID changed that.
Teaching martial arts via Zoom forced Instructors to become better instructors. It
required us to amp up our energy, focus on the individual students, and create
curriculums that would work in a distance learning platform.
Third, we worked harder than ever. In my 8 years of owning Gracie PAC, 2020
was by far the year that I worked the hardest. Our motto at Gracie PAC is, “Hard
work Pays Off.”
In 2020, I learned that yes, hard work does pay off. But then you have to work
We all put in a lot more hours into our schools, but it was the kind of work that was
required to help me level up as a business owner. We really had to think outside of the box.
The pressure of owning a small business is monumental — pandemic or not.
Now add in the stress factor of students quitting, landlords not easing up on rent,
and the fact that none of us knew when it was going to end, staying in business in
2020 required all business owners to either rise to the occasion or quit.
Fourth, I believe we all developed deeper relationships with the students who
stayed with us. The amount of personal Facebook messages, e-mails, and phone
calls we received thanking us for providing normalcy in their lives was one of our driving factors to continue to persevere.
We heard things like, “The dance studio isn’t offering online classes” and “Our music teacher isn’t offering online classes.”
The martial arts industry as a whole really stepped up to the plate — which makes
me so proud to be a part of it.
And lastly, as an Industry, we learned which mentors and consultants were the real deal and who truly had our backs.
When you look back to the beginning of COVID in March and April, which programs were offering free Facebook Lives, delivering courses to help you get online, and taking free consult calls to walk hand-in-hand with you to overcome the overwhelming?
MAIA was at the forefront of that.
As many states are starting to roll out more lockdowns, I know many school owners who are starting to feel defeated again.
But we need to understand that it’s just another bump in the road. That the “hard
things in life” are the things that define us.
It’s the things in life that make us uncomfortable that force us to grow as individuals.
And isn’t that what training in the martial arts is all about?
Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable.
We persisted once before — we will persist again.
And this time, we will go into the 2nd lockdowns wiser.
We learned what worked — and what didn’t.
When I look back on the last 9 months, I know one thing is for sure — I wouldn’t
have been able to survive if it wasn’t for the help of my mentor, Mr. Mike Metzger.
A great mentor motivates you, they challenge you, they protect you, and they coach you.
And right now, every school owner needs a mentor going into 2021.
As 2020 comes to an end, we need to have an actionable game plan going into 2021.
We need to have our year planned out so we can recruit new students, retain the
ones we have, and increase our revenue.
