If you're reading this blog, chances are, you're familiar with MAIA, or the Martial Arts Industry Association. But just because you know MAIA as an organization, you may not be familiar with all the individual team members. They do an amazing job, and are just as passionate about the work they do as you are. We're making this series of blog posts to shine the light on our MAIA team members and the amazing work they do!
And if you know MAIA, you know Frank Silverman. MAIA’s Executive Director is a longtime martial artist, as well as the owner and operator of 10 martial arts schools in and around Orlando, Florida. He is the author of Business is Business: Passion and Profit in the Martial Arts Industry, and has been one of the most impactful figures within MAIA for nearly two decades.
How long have you worked with MAIA?
I’ve been with MAIA for nearly 20 years (19, to be precise), and it’s been an amazing experience since the start!
What is something unique about the work that you do?
I get to see the benefits of how successful schools can have a positive impact on their students, families, and entire communities. Every school owner can tell you the same about their own school, but as Executive Director of MAIA, I get a “bird’s-eye view” of just how far-reaching the positive effects from each school are.
What martial arts training do you do/have you done?
I’ve trained in karate, taekwondo and judo.
What business experience or training do you have?
The “School of Hard Knocks!”
What is the best part about working for MAIA?
I love getting to see schools get results from applying their newly learned skills! Especially schools who were struggling or stuck.
Where and how do you normally interact with MAIA members (customers)?
Because I work with so many school owners across the country, most of my contact is accomplished over the phone or via email. That said, I love getting to connect with MAIA members in person at workshops throughout the year, and at events like the Martial Arts SuperShow!
If you could address every school owner in the country in person, what would you tell them?
Thank you! I know you’ve worked hard, made sacrifices, had bad days and kept going anyway. You’ve invested in yourself, in your personal martial arts training, then turned around and selflessly shared it with others. You make a huge difference, to your communities, to your individual students, and to all of martial arts.
Finally, tell us a fun fact or piece of trivia about yourself!
I love to travel and explore new places! Every location has something unique and amazing to offer!
